Member of the House of Habsburg who ruled as Holy Roman Emperor from 1576 until his death (1552-1612), remembered as an influential patron of the arts but ineffectual ruler whose mistakes led directly to the Thirty Years' War. LS in German, signed “Rudolf,” one page both sides, 8 x 12, September 2, 1579. Untranslated letter signed at the conclusion by Rudolf II. Retains the address leaf with affixed embossed royal seal. In very good to fine condition, with light staining and toning, and partial splitting along the hinge.
