President McKinley signed naval appointment for a future hero of World War I

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.5 x 19.75, January 17, 1901. President McKinley appoints Julius S. Turrill as "First Lieutenant in the Marine Corps…in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by William McKinley and countersigned by John D. Long as Secretary of the Navy. The embossed blue Navy Department seal remains affixed to the lower vignette. In fine condition. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.

Julius Spear Turrill (1876–1943) was an American Marine who received the Navy Cross for his service during World War One. First his heroics in the Battle of Belleau Wood in 1918, Turrill received the Distinguished Service Cross in 1919. He accrued numerous awards during his military career, including multiple Silver Star Citations, the Philippine Campaign Medal, China Relief Expedition Medal, Mexican Service Medal, WWI Victory Medal with five campaign stars, and Army of Occupation of Germany Medal. His foreign awards include the French Fourragère in the colors of the Croix de Guerre, Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour, French Croix de Guerre with Bronze star and two palms, and the Haitian National Order of Honour and Merit.
