ALS signed “Clementine S. Churchill,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, 28 Hyde Park Gate letterhead, November 13, 1947. Handwritten letter to Col. Frank Clarke, in part: “How very kind of you to send the delicious boullion cubes & the sugar. We are all distressed and grieved over John Winant's death. He was loved and esteemed over here & I think St. Paul's Cathedral will be full next Wednesday for his Memorial Service.” In fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge.
John Winant (born 1889) was an American diplomat and politician with the Republican party after a brief career as a teacher in Concord, New Hampshire. Winant served as the 60th governor of New Hampshire, as well as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom during most of World War II. Depressed by career disappointments, a failed marriage, and heavy debt, he killed himself in 1947.
