Commodore in the U.S. Navy (1772-1838) who served in the Quasi-War with France, both Barbary Wars in North Africa, and the War of 1812 with Britain, and played a major role in the development of the standards, customs, and traditions of the American navy. During the War of 1812, Rodgers fired the first shot of the war aboard the flagship, USS President, and also played a leading role in the recapture of Washington D.C., after the capital was burned by the British. ADS signed "Jno. Rodgers, President of the Navy Board," one page, 7.75 x 11, August 30, 1817. Handwritten official US Navy document, in part: "The Board of Navy Commissioners, are still desirous of entering into contracts for a farther supply of live oak timber cut to moulds for the building of Line of Battleships, and Frigates, to be delivered at the United States Navy yards, for which a liberal price will be given, and each cargo paid for as delivered,—ample time will be allowed for the performance of the contracts. Persons having the means to execute, and the disposition to engage in contracts, will find it to their interest to apply early."
Below, he writes: "The Printers of the Laws, of the United States, at Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk, Wilmington N.C., Charleston S.C., Savanna Ga. and New Orleans, will be pleased to publish the above once a week for six months, and send their accounts to the Navy Commissioner's office." In very good to fine condition, with a couple professional repairs to the top edge.
