Partly-printed DS, signed “Rob't Morris,” one page, 12.5 x 9.75, April 18, 1795. Stock certificate issued to "Dr. Enoch Edwards" for two shares in the entire property of the North American Land Company. Signed boldly at the conclusion by Robert Morris as president, and countersigned by the company's secretary, James Marshall, the brother of Chief Justice and Secretary of State John Marshall. In fine condition. Morris was eventually bankrupted by land speculations and served a few years in the Prune Street prison until released by the passage of the national bankruptcy law in 1802.
Enoch Edwards (1751–1802) was an American physician and a leading Patriot during the American Revolution. Born in Byberry Township, Pennsylvania, Edwards was a member of the Provincial Congress in Carpenters' Hall on June 18, 1776, which led to the Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776. He was also a signatory of the 1790 Pennsylvania Constitution. During the war, he served as an attending physician for George Washington, was a close friend of both Benjamin Rush and Thomas Jefferson, and maintained correspondence with James Monroe and John Quincy Adams.
It’s believed that Jefferson made his first draft of the Declaration of Independence in the summer house located in the garden of Dr. Edwards, in Frankford. The mansion on these grounds was in its day the resort of the most eminent men of the time, including Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, and many others. Aaron Burr, a cousin of Dr. Edwards, was also a frequent visitor.
