Description

Group lot of Apple Computer ‘The Apple Collection’ catalogs and merchandise from the company’s 1985 and 1986 gift catalogs, which is highlighted by two rare white ceramic coffee mugs featuring a fan letter from 6-year-old Xiamara Richards on the front and the Apple ‘rainbow’ logo on the back. The letter reads: “Dear Mr. Jobs, I was doing a crossword puzzle and a clue was, ‘As American as apple–.’ I thought the answer was computer but my mom said it was pie.” Apple’s marketing team found Richards’ letter so endearing that they decided to use it not only on these offered mugs but also as the front cover of their 1985 catalog. However, a couple of months after the catalog was launched, the Richards family lawyers contacted Apple and demanded a cease and desist order on the sale of the mugs. Included with the mugs are two versions of the original 1985 ‘The Apple Collection’ catalogs; one has an image and description of the mug, the other does not. Apple's removal of the mug from the catalog forced the design team to rearrange both pages 4 and 5.

Also included with the lot: a never-worn white Apple Macintosh ‘Picasso’ logo sweatshirt, size XL, with the back featuring bold red ITC Garamond text: “Apple”; a white Apple Macintosh ‘Picasso’ logo t-shirt, size large, with the back featuring gray text: “Macintosh”; and an original 1986 ‘The Apple Collection’ catalog. Both the sweatshirt and t-shirt were sold in the 1986 catalog. In overall fine condition, with slight edgewear to the catalogs, and some light stains to the t-shirt.
