Description

Leoncavallo boosts his opera Chatterton, calling it the "counterpart of Pagliacci"

Italian composer (1857–1919) best known for his operas, particularly the beloved repertoire staple 'Pagliacci.' ALS in French, signed “R. Leoncavallo,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.75 x 7.25, personal monogrammed letterhead, August 10, 1904. Handwritten letter to an impresario at Nice, France, about his opera "Chatterton," suggesting that he stage it rather than "Roland," as it is better suited to the intimate stage of the Casino at Nice. Leoncavallo expounds on the opera's merits, calling it "a composition that I consider the counterpart of Paillasse [Pagliacci]…three acts of music (of the kind that I consider the most inspired), three intimate settings, three important characters." He gives details of the vocal requirements and emphasizes the suitability of the lead role for the tenor Thomas Salignac. In fine condition. Leoncavallo's first opera, Chatterton, composed in about 1876, was indeed revived at Nice in a revised form on April 7, 1905.
