Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 11 x 15, September 18, 1835. President Jackson issues a patent to "Andrew Morse Junior, a citizen of the United States, [who] hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement in a machine for propelling timepieces by the Expansion & contraction of Atmospheric Air." Signed at the conclusion in ink by President Andrew Jackson, and countersigned by Secretary of State John Forsyth and Attorney General Benjamin F. Butler. The document retains its pink ribbon with affixed white paper seal, with the three-page manuscript describing the invention also attached; in it, Morse describes in detail the workings of his innovative machinery. In fine condition, with an old tape stain to the right edge of the first sheet.
This type of mechanism would later be popularized by Swiss clockmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre in their innovative 'Atmos' line, which boasts a mainspring wound by slight changes in temperature—an ingenious device that allows the clock to run for an unlimited period of time without the slightest human intervention.
