Description

President McKinley thanks the Republican Club of Buffalo—the site of his assassination just months later

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, Executive Mansion letterhead, November 15, 1900. Letter to C. C. Wood, secretary of the Buffalo Republican Club, in part: "Please convey to the members of your Club my cordial thanks for the message of congratulation which they have been good enough to send." In very good to fine condition, with light overall creasing.

At the time of this letter McKinley was only re-elected president for nine days. The election took place on November 6, 1900 and was a re-match of the 1896 election between Republican McKinley and Democrat William Jennings Bryan. The country's new economic upswing and the victory in the Spanish-American War helped secure McKinley's win. However, his second term was short lived: President McKinley was assassinated the following September. The mere nine-month span between this typed letter to the Buffalo Republican Club and McKinley's assassination during the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition makes this item that much more significant.
