TLS as president, signed “Harry S. Truman,” one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, May 16, 1945. Letter to the Hon. Harry B. Hawes, in full: "My thanks for your good wishes and expression of confidence! I have noted with appreciation all that you say in the letter you sent me, especially your warm tribute to my lamented predecessor, and am grateful for your willingness to be helpful in the days ahead." Truman adds a handwritten postscript: "I've written you since this was dictated but I'll send it anyway." In fine condition. President Franklin D. Roosevelt passed away on April 12, 1945, upon which Truman was thrust into the nation's highest office after just 82 days as vice president.
