TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, December 5, 1939. Letter to the Hon. Harry B. Hawes, offering a correction to a humorous hunting story. In full: "Tell your friend that that duck was a goose and whether he likes it or not the history of the world was not changed. Actually five geese were coming into the blind, I hit the leading goose, swung left to try to get another with my left barrel and at that moment the first goose hit me a glancing blow on my right shoulder. I understand there are a number of people in Russia, Germany (and the United States) who regret the poor aim of that goose." In fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge.
Accompanied by Hawes's retained carbon copies of his letters to FDR of December 4th and 6th, in part: "Shortly after your first election, I called on you with six Senators. They had me present for your consideration a National Conservation Program. Incidentally, this has gone through including the Migratory Bird Treaty with Mexico. During the conversation, you turned to me and said, 'Harry, I was sitting in a duck blind, a duck was flying high over head. I shot at it and wheeled to shoot one coming in and the overhead bird hit me on the head and nearly killed me.' This is duck season. Yesterday, I was relating this story to James Barnes (Bishop) and he replied, 'Hell, Senator, if that duck had been a goose the history of the world would have been changed.'"
From the Collection of Paul K. Carr, former UACC President and Noted Expert.
