Description

TLS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, July 23, 1948. Letter to Samuel Goldwyn Productions, in full: “I have your two letters dated July 22, 1948, which were left at my home last night, but which I did not receive until this morning. This is the first communication I have received from you, with respect to your plans for my services in England, which can be considered to be specific enough to be treated as an instruction. As you know, I have been constantly engaged in the rendition of my services for you until late yesterday, and there has been no time available to me for the making of the arrangements which are necessary in connection with my departure for England. I am now making every effort to expedite these arrangements, which include, among other things, obtaining a clearance from the Treasury Department and arranging for the care of my home in my absence. For your information, I have an appointment for a meeting with the representatives of the Treasury Department this afternoon.

From the time of my first knowledge of the possibility that I might be sent to England to render my services under my contract with you, I had hoped to be able to arrange for the care of my children here in Los Angeles during my absence. Owing to the lack of available time, resulting from my engagement in the rendition of my services for you, I was unable to make such arrangements for the care of my children, and consequently, have no alternative but to take them with me.

Nevertheless, it will be impossible for me to leave Los Angeles tomorrow, July 24, 1948. Although I will be put to great inconvenience to do so, I believe that I will be able to depart from Los Angeles on Monday, July 26, 1948.

As soon as I received your letter dated July 8, 1948, and notwithstanding that the letter was ambiguous and equivocal, I immediately applied for a re-entry permit, in the thought that you might ultimately instruct me to depart for England. As you are perhaps aware, the normal time for the issuance of a re-entry permit after application is made therefor is about six weeks. I have not yet received word that the re-entry permit has been issued. Obviously, I cannot reasonably be expected to leave the United States until the permit is issued. However, my suggestion, above set forth, that I might be able to leave Los Angeles on Monday, July 26, 1948, is with the thought in mind of proceeding to New York and there awaiting the issuance of the permit. I will be able to sail as promptly as possible after the permit is issued.

In view of the fact, as I have explained, that I will not be able to leave Los Angeles tomorrow, and cannot reasonably be expected to do so, I am returning to you herewith the tickets delivered by you to my agent.” In fine condition.
