TLS in personal stationery, signed “G. Bernard Shaw,” one page, 8 x 10, August 8, 1939. Letter to English actress Constance Collier, in full: "I have done my best to secure the part of Lady Britomart in Major Barbara for you; but Gabriel Pascal has Marie Löhr on his hands by a long contract; and I cannot reasonably force him to keep her eating her head off when she is eligible for the part and very keen on playing it.
Mrs. Patrick Campbell captivated Pascal in Paris with a view to an engagement for the same part; but she will not be separated from her abominable little dog, and so cannot come to England, where the play is to be filmed. This occurred before your letter arrived. There is nothing that would please me more than to have you play for me and enable you to escape from Hollywood. I hope that the extraordinary success of the Pygmalion film will get British films on their feet and also get films of our class on to the screen, so that real actresses will have some chance against films stars with their eyebrows shaved off to make them all exactly alike. My wife, who of course remembers you very well indeed, is glad that you have not forgotten her. But we are both dreadfully old." In fine condition.
