Two ALSs from Hollywood power couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, signed “Elizabeth” and “Richard,” individually penned in black ink on both sides of an off-white 7.25 x 10.5 sheet of Hotel Maria Isabel ‘Marco Polo Suite’ (Mexico) stationery. The letters, both undated (circa 1964), are directed to legendary entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr., and his wife, May Britt, with Taylor’s handwritten letter reading: “Thank you so much for the pictures of your adorable children. My God, they are beautiful! Also thank you for thinking of us. Richard’s film, so far, is going marvelously — but I am still keeping my fingers & eyes crossed. There is a lot of talent (and temperament) around. I hope we see you very soon.” Burton’s letter on the other side reads: “Lovely kids. ‘Take no notice of ‘talent’’ is my motto – I don’t want to join the Jennings Lang fan-club. Much love to you both.” In fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.
Based on its content, this letter appears to date around 1964. Davis and Britt, after marrying in 1960, had their first child in 1961 and then adopted two boys in 1963. Also, given the stationery is from a Mexican hotel, it seems possible that these letters were penned while newlyweds Taylor and Burton were on their honeymoon after marrying in Montreal on March 15, 1964.
