"Pursuant to the Statute entitled 'An Act concerning Slaves,'" DeWitt Clinton grants a manumission as mayor of NYC

American politician (1769-1828) who served as senator and who, as governor of New York, played a major role in the construction of the Erie Canal. LS, one page, 7.25 x 9, April 6, 1805. As mayor of New York, Clinton certifies that "pursuant to the Statute entitled 'An Act concerning Slaves,' we have this day examined a certain Negro Woman called Phoebe—now the property of Robert Graham of the City of New York which said Slave is about to be manumitted and she appearing to us to be under fifty years of age and of sufficient ability to provide for herself we do grant this manumission." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by Mayor DeWitt Clinton. Mounted, matted and framed to an overall size of 16 x 18.25. In fine condition.
