ALS signed “H. Hamlin,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, United States Senate Chamber letterhead, March 4, 1878. Handwritten letter marked “Private,” addressed to Massachusetts senator Hosea Knowlton, in part: “In reply I will say that up to this time the Delegation has stood firmly by you. But for the last week we have known that our efforts would be unavailing. The Pres’t has said he will not nominate you. What, if any thing, further will be done by us is uncertain. If we could see that any effort of ours would secure a less objectionable man than Talbot or Madduck, we might act. But I can see nothing to encourage us. If the whole Delegation could unite in favor of both Talbot & Maddock, we might defeat them both. But it would hardly be consistent to be in favor of two men for the same place. That’s not my way.” In fine condition.
