Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Connecticut (1726–1797) who commanded troops in the defense of New York during the American Revolution. Partly-printed DS, one page, 12 x 7.75, May 17, 1797. As governor of Connecticut, Wolcott appoints Samuel Stiles to be “Captain of the 2d Company in the 19th Regiment of Militia in this State.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by Oliver Wolcott and countersigned by Samuel Wyllys as secretary. In very good condition, with some light stains, areas of paper loss, and old archival repairs to the back of the fold separations.
