Major general in the Revolutionary War (1727–1800) who was second in command to George Washington, and, later, congressman from Massachusetts. Revolutionary War-dated manuscript DS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, January 3, 1777. A military pay order issued to Ebenezer Hancock, the “Deputy Paymaster General of the Army of the United States of America,” which requests that he pay Joseph Ward “thirty nine pounds twelve shillings, equal to one hundred thirty two Dollars, it being for four months pay as Aid de Camp to Major Genl Ward, in the Service of the United States of America, for the months of September, October, November & December.” Signed at the conclusion by Ward and countersigned by Joseph Ward, the former’s second cousin. Expertly inlaid into a slightly larger sheet and in fine condition, with some light staining and toning.
