LS in Chinese, signed by Chiang Kai-shek, two pages, 8.25 x 12.5, Republic of China letterhead, September 1, 1964. Letter to Francisco Orlich, president of Costa Rica, informing him of the arrival of a "friendly economic delegation," visiting to "establish economic relations between the two countries and convey the views of the governments and peoples of their respective countries." The letter closes with a line of good fortune: "Your country's national destiny is prosperous." In fine condition.
An intriguing letter of state promoting the development of economic ties between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Costa Rica. In 1965, the Free China Journal reported: 'To promote trade, the Chinese government sent two economic missions to Latin America in 1964…Between September and November, the second mission of six members visited Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, EI Salvador, Panama, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Honduras. The mission issued a joint statement with Jamaica and concluded trade agreements with the eight other countries. It also paid an unofficial visit to Trinidad…During these visits, the missions purchased US$15 million worth of corn, barley, hides, fish meal, cotton, wool, and copper from South America and US$4 million worth of cotton, sulfur, corn, gypsum, hides, and wheat from Central America. Within the next three years, the volume of two-way trade between free China and South America is expected to reach US$180 million and that between free China and Central America US$50 million. Promising export items from Taiwan are textiles, paper, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, sugar, fertilizers, electrical appliances, canned foods, rubber products, preserved fruits, citronella oil, tea, camphor, handicrafts, timber manufactures, and toys.'
Costa Rica would maintain official relations with the Republic of China (commonly known as Taiwan) instead of the People's Republic of China (commonly known as China) until June 1, 2007, when it opened relations with China, causing Taiwan to end ties with the South American nation.
