Politician (1830-1893) nicknamed the 'Plumed Knight,' he became secretary of state in 1889. Blaine served as a US senator, speaker of the house, secretary of state to three presidents (Harrison, Garfield, and Arthur), and he was also the 1884 Republican nominee for president, losing the election to Grover Cleveland. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, August 1, 1885. Handwritten letter to "Mr. Lyon," in part: "Pray accept the most sincere thanks of Mrs. Blaine and myself for your very kind invitation to partake of the hospitality…We are held so closely at home this summer by a continuous re-union of old friends and kindred that we can hardly hope to enjoy the pleasure you so temptingly offer us—but are hearts are none the less grateful…Our whole family retain the most pleasant recollections of Bar Harbor."
