Important military figure and politician (1608-1670) and a key figure in the restoration of Charles II. Manuscript DS, signed “Albemarle,” one page, 8.75 x 13.75, April 10, 1665. Document issued "At the Court of Whitehall," by important English Civil War military and political figures as in their capacity as the Charles II’s “Principal Commissioners for Prizes,” advising the “Judges of his Majesties High Court of Admiralty” to receive an urgent claim by a Monsieur Roux concerning the ship “Le Don De Dieu” because of the quantity of perishable goods on the ship. Likely the ship was a prize taken by Roux during the Second Anglo-Dutch War.
Signed at the conclusion in ink by “Albemarle” (i.e., George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670)) a key figure in the restoration of Charles II and Lord Proprietor of the Carolinas; “Jo(hn) Berkeley “ (1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton (1602-78)) Lord Lt . of Ireland, co-founder of the Province of New Jersey, Brother of Colonial Virginia Governor Sir William Berkeley; “Anglesey” (Arthur Anglesey, 1st Earl Anglesey (1614-86)) Lord Privy Seal under Charles II; “Arlington” (Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington (1618-85)) Keeper of the Privy Purse; and Sir “Robert Southwell” (1635-1702) Secretary of State for Ireland, President of the Royal Society. In very good to fine condition, with dampstaining affecting appearance, but not the signature.
