Description

Queen consort (1771–1845) of Spain and the Indies, Naples and Sicily as the wife of Emperor Napoleon’s elder brother, Joseph Bonaparte. LS in French, signed “Your affectionate sister, Julie,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 9, January 17, 1837. Letter to Prince Felice Baciocchi, the widowed husband of Elisa Marie Bonaparte (the sister of Napoleon Bonaparte). In full (translated): "My dear brother-in-law. I thank you for the good wishes of your kind letter of 2 January. I’ve grown accustomed to your support over many years in all that concerns me and in all that we have had to endure. Our brother-in-law Louis is in Pisa, where he hopes to find a milder climate. I find again that my own health is always quite feeble, after taking time to care for my sister, Madame Villeneuve, who is suffering quite a bit at this time. News of my husband is good, but sadly nothing presages the reunion that I much desire. Charlotte joins me, my dear brother-in-law, in assuring you of our deep and caring sentiments.” She adds a handwritten postscript: "I beg you not to forget me in the matter of Mr. LeBon." The integral address leaf carries the straight line postal mark "Bulugne." In fine condition.

King Joseph Bonaparte, Julie’s husband, had fled to America following his brother’s second abdication in 1815 and was not reunited with Julie in Italy until 1844. Louis, who is referenced as being in Pisa, was Emperor Napoleon’s younger brother and a former King of Holland who was then in exile. His son became Emperor Napoleon III. Madame de Villenueve was Julie’s sister, Catherine (1769-1843). Charlotte was the daughter of Julie and Joseph Bonaparte who died in childbirth two years after this letter.
