Description

JFK interviewed for the inaugural episode of CBS Evening News—a presidential gift for esteemed newsman Walter Cronkite

Incredible vintage color glossy 9.5 x 7.5 photo of President John F. Kennedy standing with legendary broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite and his wife, Betsy, signed and inscribed on the original presentation mount in black ink as president, “For Walter and Betsy, with warm personal regards, John F. Kennedy.” Archivally matted and framed with a small plate dated to September 2, 1963, to an overall size of 14 x 14; a window to the frame backing reveals the reverse of the photo and a credit stamp for photographer Cecil W. Stoughton, “Office of the Military Aide to the President.” In fine condition, with trivial brushing to the signature, and light fading to the image.

President Kennedy signed this photograph for the Cronkites when he was interviewed on the inaugural episode of CBS Evening News, the first half-hour weeknight news broadcast on network television; the show was previously 15 minutes in length and called Walter Cronkite with the News, the given title after he replaced Douglas Edwards as the host on April 16, 1962. During the outdoors interview with Cronkite, which aired on September 2, 1963, President Kennedy assessed how four current issues would affect his chances of reelection in 1964: civil rights, unemployment, the Partial Test Ban Treaty, and the Vietnam War. An outstanding presidential collectible from the collection of ‘the most trusted man in America.’ In less than two months, Cronkite’s arguably most famous broadcast occurred when he announced President Kennedy’s death to the American public.
