Description

Bold ink signature of the newly named prince regent

Ink signature as prince regent, "George PR,” on an off-white 9.25 x 2.5 sheet clipped from a document, the upper portion of which reads: "In the name and on the Behalf of His Majesty." Pencil notation below dates the signature to February 19, 1811. In fine condition, with a thin strip of toning along the top edge.

In late 1810, King George III’s mental health once again broke down, following the death of his youngest daughter, Princess Amelia. With the king no longer able to rule, Parliament agreed to follow the precedent of 1788; without the King's consent, the Lord Chancellor affixed the Great Seal of the Realm to letters patent naming Lords Commissioners, who then signified the granting of Royal Assent to a bill that became the Regency Act 1811. Under the Act, the King was suspended from the personal discharge of the royal functions, and George, Prince of Wales discharged those functions in the name and on behalf of the King from February 5, 1811, to January 29, 1820, when the King died and the Prince of Wales succeeded to the throne.
