Description

Governor Hancock appoints a lieutenant in the Massachusetts militia

Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.25 x 11.5, April 4, 1792. As governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, John Hancock appoints Israel Hunt as “Lieutenant of a Company in the Seventh Regiment and Third Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth,” and directing him to “discharge the Duty of a Lieutenant in leading, ordering and exercising said Company in Arms, both inferior Officers and Soldiers; and to keep them in good Order and Discipline." Signed boldly in the left margin by Hancock, and countersigned below by John Avery as secretary. The large paper seal remains affixed to the upper left. In very good to good condition, with small areas of paper loss along fragile intersecting folds, splitting along the lower horizontal fold, somewhat irregular overall toning, and chips, tears, and stains to the edges; Hancock's signature remains bold and essentially unaffected by any flaws.
