Partly-printed DS, one page, 16.25 x 10.25, May 8, 1798. As governor of New York, Jay appoints Jesse Woodward as "Ensign of a Company in the Regiment of Militia in the Country of Washington." Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by Governor John Jay and countersigned by Secretary Jasper Hopper. The embossed paper seal remains intact at upper left. In very good to fine condition, with some minor loss at fold intersections; Jay's signature is bold and unaffected.
