Description

Huge presidential portrait inscribed by FDR to the first US Ambassador to be killed in the line of duty

Vintage matte-finish 15.25 x 11.25 photo of President Roosevelt at his desk by Harris & Ewing, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen, "For Laurence Steinhardt, with the warm regards of his friend, Franklin D. Roosevelt.” Framed to an overall size of 16.75 x 12.75. In fine condition, with some small spots of silvering to the image, and light wear to the original frame.

Laurence Steinhardt (1892–1950) was an American economist, lawyer, and senior diplomat of the United States Department of State, serving as ambassador to Sweden, Peru, the Soviet Union, Turkey, Czechoslovakia, and Canada throughout his two decades of service. A close ally of FDR, he actively supported Governor Roosevelt’s pre-convention presidential campaign in 1932, and helped to draft campaign speeches on the economics of the era. He died in a plane crash while en route from Canada to the United States in 1950, becoming the first United States Ambassador to be killed in the line of duty.
