American journalist and intelligence agent (1901–1961) who was a Communist Party member, Soviet spy, and a principal figure in the Alger Hiss case. Signed book: Witness. In very good condition, with toning to the edges of the signed page and fore edges, sunning and soiling to the dust jacket, and partial splitting to the front inner hinge.
Released in 1952 to widespread acclaim, Witness was a combination of autobiography and a warning about the dangers of communism. Ronald Reagan credited the book as the inspiration behind his conversion from a New Deal Democrat to a conservative Republican, and George Will recognized it as 'a canonical text of conservatism.'
