Description

Full free frank by James Monroe, addressed to his nephew, “Lieut. James Monroe”

Desirable hand-addressed full free frank, measuring 9.75 x 8 unfolded, with central panel measuring 5.5 x 3.5, addressed by Monroe to his nephew, "Lieut. James Monroe, New York," and franked in the upper right corner, "James Monroe." Dated March 26, [no year]. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining and soiling, and a short tear to the top edge impinging on, but not touching, the signature. A unique piece of familial correspondence, effectively carrying two signatures of the Founding Father.

The recipient, Lieut. James Monroe (1799–1870), was the son of Monroe's older brother. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1815, and from 1817 to 1822, he served as aide-de-camp to General Winfield Scott, receiving a promotion to first lieutenant in December 1818. He would later serve in the House of Representatives from 1839 to 1841.
