Soldier and businessman (1831–1916) who was a pioneering figure in military intelligence during the Civil War, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's intelligence chief in the Western Theater. In postwar years he was a railroad executive who helped direct the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. TLS signed “G. M. Dodge,” one page, 8.5 x 11, August 31, 1903. Letter to George Pegram, chief engineer of the Manhattan Railway, in part: "This will be handed to you by my grandson, Grenville D. Montgomery, who desires, if possible, to connect himself with the Manhattan or Rapid transit systems here, and I would be glad if you would talk with him in relation to the matter. He is a graduate of Yale, and was in both the Cuban and Philippine Wars. While in the service he contracted malarial fever, which has prevented him from starting in before now…You will find he is very competent to take hold of and accomplish anything he understands." In fine condition, with light haloing to the typed text.
