American banker and philanthropist (1825–1910) who made his fortune during the gold rush with investments in ancillary businesses that supported the mining industry, such as banks and railroads; he was once California's wealthiest citizen. Partly-printed DS, signed “D. O. Mills,” one page, 9.5 x 5.75, April 21, 1854. Stock certificate for one share of the Tuolumne County Water Company issued to Darius Ogden Mills, endorsed on the reverse in ink by Mills. The certificate features an elaborate vignette of a mining scene. Attractively cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and plaque to an overall size of 19 x 30, with a window in the backing for viewing the reverse. In fine condition.
