Description

Franconian-born French military officer (1721–1780) who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and was mortally wounded while fighting at the Battle of Camden. ALS in French, signed “de Kalb,” one page, 7 x 8.5, July 12, 1761. Untranslated handwritten letter by Johann de Kalb. Beautifully cloth-matted and framed with a portrait, biographical caption, and map to an overall size of 25 x 29. In fine condition.

On visiting de Kalb's grave several years after his death, George Washington reportedly said: 'So, there lies the brave de Kalb. The generous stranger, who came from a distant land to fight our battles and to water with his blood the tree of liberty. Would to God he had lived to share its fruits!' Numerous towns and counties throughout the United States bear his name, as have two of the warships of the United States Navy: the Civil War river ironclad USS Baron DeKalb and the World War I troop transport USS DeKalb.
