Description

English physician, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet (1731–1892) who was a key thinker of the Midlands Enlightenment, and whose grandsons include Charles Darwin and Francis Galton. ALS signed “E. Darwin,” one page, 7 x 9, December 20, 1794. Handwritten letter, in part: "Tho we hope to have the pleasure of seeing you tomorrow, I trouble you with this line, which I hope you will receive in time, to desire you will wrap my treatise on boarding schools, & send it by the coach directed to Mr. Bent Surg'n at Bedford…I have promised him the sight of it after you have done with it, & I shall be glad of any remarks, which may have occurred to you." Nicely cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and plaque to an overall size of 23.25 x 19.75. In fine condition. In 1797, Darwin would publish 'A plan for the conduct of female education in boarding schools,' as he sought to rectify the lack of education for middle-class girls in Great Britain.
