Description

American soldier and politician (1737-1818) who rose to the rank of major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution but lost his command after a controversial retreat from Fort Ticonderoga. ADS, signed “Ar. St. Clair,” one page, 7 x 4.5, April 11, 1799. Handwritten pay order to "G. Simpson Esquire, Cashier of the Bank of the United States," in part: "Be pleased to pay to Thomas Gibson or his order five hundred and fifty six Dollars, and sixty two cents, value received, and charge them to account." Beautifully mounted, cloth-matted, and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 17.5 x 29.5. In fine condition.
