Description

Businessman, railroad executive, and industrialist (1823–1881) who served under Lincoln as assistant secretary of war, overseeing the Union's use of railroads during the Civil War. He became the fourth president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which became the largest publicly traded corporation in the world, and mentored Andrew Carnegie. Partly-printed DS, signed “Thomas A. Scott,” one page, 11.75 x 7.25, December 31, 1873. Stock certificate for 318 shares in the Pennsylvania Company issued to W. H. Barnes, signed at the conclusion in ink by Scott as the company's president. The certificate features a fine vignette of two stallions and a bald eagle. Attractively cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and plaque to an overall size of 29.75 x 21.25. In fine condition.
