Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744–1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as 'gerrymandering.' Partly-printed DS, signed “E. Gerry,” one page, 13.75 x 7.25, February 4, 1812. As governor of Massachusetts, Gerry appoints Joshua Putnam "to be Captain of a Company in the Second Regiment of Infantry in the First Brigade, and Third Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth." Neatly signed in the left margin in ink by Governor Elbridge Gerry, and countersigned at the conclusion by Secretary Benjamin Homans. The white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains intact. Nicely cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and biographical caption to an overall size of 32 x 24.5. In fine condition, with light creasing.
