Description

War-dated appointment for a "Major" in the "Army of the United States"—a future aide to George Washington

Partly-printed vellum DS, signed “Sam'l Huntington President,” one page, 10.25 x 5.5, June 29, 1780. Huntington appoints Hodijah Baylies to be "Major in the Army of the United States." Neatly signed at the conclusion by Huntington as President of the Continental Congress, and countersigned by Benjamin Stoddert as Secretary of the Board of War. The white paper seal affixed at the upper left remains intact. Handsomely cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and biographical caption to an overall size of 18.75 x 29.25. In very good to fine condition, with overall light wrinkling and soiling, and fading to much of the handwritten text (including Stoddert's signature). The appointee, Hodijah Baylies (1756–1842), was General Benjamin Lincoln’s son-in-law and former aide-de-camp, and served as George Washington's aide from May 1782 to December 1783.
