Description

Dick sends James Stephens poems to his crush—"Some of these will make you feel bad—some better. I love them all."

ALS signed “Phil,” who adds a heart with arrow sketch, one page, 8.5 x 11, October 25, 1964. Handwritten letter to Kirsten Nelson, the wife of science fiction author Ray Nelson, who had known Dick since childhood and purportedly introduced the writer to LSD. It’s believed that Dick was secretly in love with Kirsten, and, unable to openly express his true feelings, he chose to immortalize her as a character in many of his books. He also, as this letter shows, sent her poetry. It reads as follows: “Some of these will make you feel bad—some better. I love them all. Show Ray the part on page 2, from ‘Where the Demons Grin.’” Below, Dick adds: “The Last poem, ‘Slan Leath,’ is the last poem. It is the end. Mors Scribit. Sedi Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Or is it the beginning?” Included with the letter are four pages of typed poems and partial poems by Irish poet James Stephens from his poetry collection Insurrections, which includes ‘The Whisperer,’ ‘Nature,’ ‘Where the Demons Grin,’ ‘Seumas Beg,’ ‘The Rebel,’ ‘What Tomas An Buile Said In A Pub,’ and ‘Slan Leath.’ In fine condition, with scattered faint stains. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope hand-addressed by Dick, who incorporates his signature into the return address field: “Philip K. Dick, 3919 Lyon Ave, Oakland 1, Calif.”
