TLS signed “Yours sincerely, Winston S. Churchill,” one page, 8 x 10, 28, Hyde Park Gate letterhead, September 28, 1946. Addressed from “The Royal Palace, Brussels,” a letter to Councillor James Simpson, J.P., in full: “Thank you for your letter of September 23. I shall be staying at the Clifton Hotel in your Borough from Thursday until Saturday and, in view of your kind invitation, I and my daughter, Miss Mary Churchill, will be pleased to visit the Town Hall and sign the distinguished visitors' book. I shall be very much pressed during my visit to Blackpool as, not only have I the Freedom Ceremony on Friday, October 4, but also much political work in connection with the Party Conference. I hope therefore you will not mind if I do not stay more than five minutes.” Churchill adds the salutation and one word of the text in his own hand. In very good to fine condition, with a file hole, corner paper loss, and overall creasing.
Accompanied by an original matte-finish 7.75 x 6 photo of Churchill signing the “distinguished visitors' book” of Lytham St Annes Town Hall in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England, as well as by a letter of provenance: “James and Margaret Simpson were Mayor and Mayoress of Lytham St. Annes in September 1946. They lived in Beach Road Lytham where I and my family were regular visitors. My father John Turner was their nephew. I am their great-niece. I confirm that these documents are genuine and that I remember the occasion of Mr Churchill's visit to Lytham St. Annes Town Hall. These documents were amongst the effects of my deceased mother Dorothy Turner.”
