Description

Singer-songwriter (1897-1933), known as the 'Singing Brakeman' and 'Yodeling Cowboy,' who melded jazz, blues, and Southern mountain music, and became one of the first superstars of country music, and one of the original inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961. Scarce vintage glossy 8 x 10 Victor promo photo of Rodgers with his acoustic guitar, billing him as 'America's Blue Yodeler,' signed and inscribed in fountain pen "To my friend Starr Bryden, Sincerely, Jimmie Rodgers, 5/1/29.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered light creasing, and some light silvering to the darker areas of the image. Scarce in signed photographs, this is the first such example we have offered in over a decade.

The recipient, Starr Bryden, was a well-known professional photographer in Kerrville, Texas, from around 1915 until his death in 1959, known for his pictures of local scenes including landscapes, rodeos, and everyday life in the seat of Kerr County.
