Description

"It was the first time that multiple meningiomas had been called to my attention"

Surgeon (1869–1939) who pioneered many modern neurosurgical techniques and investigated the functions of the pituitary gland. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal Yale University letterhead, November 11, 1936. Letter to Dr. Glanville Y. Rusk of Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco, California, in full: “So nice to get in touch with you again after all these years. I am sending the photograph of the case to which I have made brief allusion in something I am writing, to the effect that it was the first time that multiple meningiomas had been called to my attention. And as in my transfer here, the correspondence had been lost, I thought that you might perhaps have some idea about it or could give me a guess at the date. You needn't bother to send the photograph back, for I shall not care to reproduce it. I merely wanted the information for the reasons I have given. I am delighted to learn of your sister's benefit from this muscle adjustment and hope you will give her my regards and best wishes when you write her.” In fine condition, with light edge toning. Accompanied by two original photographs of brain lesions, both mounted on heavy cardstock.

Cushing's “brief allusion” is found on page 116 of Meningiomas: ‘While there have been reports in the literature of multiple intracranial tumors which may possibly have been meningiomas…our attention was first drawn to the matter by Dr. G. Y. Rusk who many years ago from the Pathological Institute on Ward's Island sent us photographs of the meninges of a brain showing four or five small isolated tumors.” In 1936, Glanville Rusk was the head of the Department of Pathology at the University of California's Medical School.
