Description

Boldly signed letter from "Napoleon" to the soon-to-be King of Denmark

LS in French, signed “Napoleon,” one page, 8 x 9.75, February 20, 1808. Penned in a beautiful calligraphic hand, this untranslated letter was sent to Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark regarding the birth of Princess Vilhelmine Marie, the sixth daughter and youngest child of Frederick by his wife and first cousin, Princess Marie Sophie of Hesse-Kassel. Signed boldly at the conclusion by Napoleon with his full signature. The reverse of the second integral page is addressed to (translated) “My brother the King of Denmark,” which is interesting given that Frederick was still serving as Crown Prince Regent. In fine condition, with some light soiling and creasing.

From 1784 until his accession on March 13, 1808, less than a month after this letter was signed, Frederick VI served as regent during his father's mental illness and was referred to as the ‘Crown Prince Regent.’ Frederick VI served as King of Denmark from 1808 until he died in 1839 and as King of Norway from 1808 until February 7, 1814. He was the last king of Denmark–Norway.
