Oscar-winning English novelist and screenwriter (1900-1954) whose works include Lost Horizon and Goodbye, Mr. Chips. TLS, one page both sides, 5.75 x 9, Ingoldsby letterhead, August 15, 1934. Letter to Harry Zollars, in part: "I was so pleased to have your letter and to know how much you liked Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Its success in America has been very gratifying to me, and I have greatly appreciated all the friendly letters about it that I have received from Americans. One or two other books of mine have already appeared in America: And Now Goodbye (in 1931), Ill Wind (in 1932), Lost Horizon (in 1933), Without Armor (in 1934—all these published by Messrs. William Morrow, of New York. I hope you will find at any rate some parts of these that you will like as much as Mr. Chips. At present I am busy planning a new novel which should appear during next year sometime…Do I consider Mr. Chips my finest work yet? I think I do, on the whole. But as for whom I consider the most promising young writer in England, I really don't know what to say. Personally, I prefer the older writers, and my own particular favorites are Maurice Baring and Somerset Maugham. Among the younger people, I think Miss Kate O'Brien is as promising as anyone." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
