Description

Unique real estate deed signed twice by Frederick Douglass and Belva A. Lockwood—two of the great Civil Rights activists of the 19th century

Historic partly-printed DS, signed twice, “Fred'k Douglass,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 14, July 21, 1882. Deed for a transaction between John McCroray and the famed women's rights activist Belva Ann Lockwood, filled out entirely in Lockwood's hand (incorporating her signature, "Belva A. Lockwood," once within the text and once on the docketing panel), by which she purchases a parcel of real estate in Washington, D.C., for the sum of $150. Signed twice on the docketing panel in ink by Frederick Douglass as recorder of deeds in the District of Columbia. In very good condition, with light toning and soling, a bit of edge chipping, and partial splits to folds.

A fascinating document boasting the signatures of two of the great activists of the 19th century: born a slave, Frederick Douglass (c. 1818–1895) became the voice of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century, known for his powerful oratory and writings. Belva Ann Lockwood (1830–1917) was one of the first woman lawyers in America, advocating for women's rights and women's suffrage; she became the first woman to run for president in 1884.
