Description

Unsigned handwritten notes in pencil by President John F. Kennedy, two pages, 4 x 7.25, The Carlyle letterhead, no date but circa 1961. One page reads, in full: "Defense of the dollar / Negotiations with Spain? / Hodges statement on investment." The other reads: "Letter to Speak / Return of our Ambassador / Spanish base, Portuguese base alternatives." In fine condition.

These interesting political and economic notes are enhanced by their stationery: The Carlyle Hotel became known as 'the New York White House' during Kennedy's administration, as the president maintained an apartment on the 34th floor. The Carlyle became the site of frequent meetings with friends and dignitaries alike, his visitors ranging from Marilyn Monroe to Secretary of State Dean Rusk. Here, he mentions a statement by Secretary of Commerce Luther H. Hodges and ongoing diplomatic negotiations with Spain and Portugal related to United States military bases.
