Description

"Words are very bendable"

TLS, one page, 8.25 x 11.75, personal letterhead, November 17, 1977. Letter to poet and lyricist John Bycroft, in full: “I had a chance to look at the lyrics and I think they're amazing. I don't know what's worse though, the Sunday papers or your cheer up! Have they got music to go with them? If not why not, I think there are a hundred thousand people who feel exactly like you and if the message could be put across with the right type of rancid grin it would get through. Anyway, I like them. Try writing a few happy ones.” Townshend adds a postscript: “I know a few people who are after lyrics. If you wish I could show them around a bit. The trouble is, sometimes all that does is give other people ideas, words are very bendable, nevertheless it might start something. (Something you might like I suppose).” In fine condition.
