Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 20.5 x 16.5, March 23, 1813. Four-language ship's papers issued to George Brooks “master or commander of the Schooner called Maria Louisa…lying at present in the port of Beaufort [South Carolina] bound for Nantz [Nantes, France] and laden with Cotton.” Signed in the middle section by President James Madison and countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith. The left side bears the original embossed paper seal. In very good to fine condition, with overall mottled toning.

This ship document was used during the War of 1812 (1812-1815) between the U.S. and Great Britain. Britain opposed U.S. expansion westward and the U.S. opposed Britain’s alliance with Native Americans. The Royal Navy imposed restrictions on American trade with France, blockading U.S. ports and impressing American sailors. It was a dangerous time for U.S. merchant ships at sea.
