Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.75 x 9.75, November 1, 1830. President Jackson grants Anthony Stingley of Tippecanoe County, Indiana a plot of land “at Crawfordsville, Indiana, containing eighty acres.” Prominently signed at the conclusion by Andrew Jackson and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Elijah Hayward. The white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with a tear across the right vertical fold of the document.

Anthony Stingley (1798-1887) was born in Hardy County, Virginia, and was the son of George Stingley (1763-1838), a farmer who had served six months in 1781 and 1782 as a soldier in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War. Anthony married Lucinda Ann Hagler (1809-1892) of Ohio in 1828, and the young Stingley couple likely lived in Clinton County, Ohio, during the first year of their marriage. In 1829 and 1830, President Andrew Jackson granted Anthony Stingley at least three 80-acre tracts of land in the Lauramie township of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, which was offered for sale at nearby Crawfordsville, Indiana. This town is the county seat of Montgomery County, which borders the southern side of Tippecanoe County.
