Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “J. Q. Adams,” one page, 14 x 8.75, September 20, 1827. President Adams grants to “Jonas Spangler Assignee of Isaac Taylor” a parcel of land "containing One hundred and thirty eight acres and ten hundredths of an acre of the Lands directed to be sold at Wooster by the Acts of Congress, entitled 'An Act providing for the sale of the Lands of the United States in the Territory north west of Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky River.'" Signed at the conclusion by John Quincy Adams and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office George Graham. The white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains intact. In fine condition.

Jonas Spangler (1778-1846) moved with his wife Hannah Rhodearmel (1786-1827), children, and other relatives from the Armagh Township of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, 200 miles westward to the inviting but challenging frontier of Plain Township in Wayne County, Ohio, in 1819 for better, more fertile farmland. Spangler farmed two adjoining tracts of land totaling 298 acres located about seven miles west of Wooster in what eventually became the Reedsburg community. Isaac Taylor of Derry Township, Westmoreland County, Pa., had claimed the 138-acre tract in 1814 and assigned the grant to Spangler. Thomas Taylor and Cyrus Spink, both of Wooster where the General Land Office was located, had claimed the 160-acre grant in 1816 and assigned it to Spangler.

The federal government originally granted area land for $2 per acre. Spangler paid the men to assign their land grants to him and lived on the land while making installment payments on the total due. The government later discounted the final price of both tracts. He received the 138-acre grant in 1827 from President John Quincy Adams after payments were complete, and three years later he received the 160-acre grant from President Andrew Jackson.
