Description

Monroe-issued military land grant from 1818

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 11.5 x 8.25, October 3, 1818. President Monroe grants “John Kellock, late a private in Pratt’s Company: twenty first Regiment of Infantry, a certain Tract of Land, containing One hundred & Sixty Acres…in the Territory of Illinois.” Signed at the conclusion by James Monroe and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Josiah Meigs. The white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains intact, as does its rare General Land Office tag offering "A Map of the Bounty Lands" for a price of one dollar. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, staining, and creasing.

John Kellock was born about 1791 in Massachusetts, in an area that is now St. George, Maine. He married Mary Stover in 1808 and served as a private in the 21st Infantry Regiment from Massachusetts during the War of 1812. The 21st fought bravely in the Battle of Niagara in 1814. Kellock was discharged at Sackets Harbor, New York, on Lake Ontario near Watertown on May 24, 1815.
